Physician finance
This category is for physicians who are tired of treating a high salary like a personality. Income is not a plan. A paycheck you cannot walk away from is a leash. The work here is how to make work optional: a number, a rate, and an order of operations you can run between shifts. I write it that way because the floor already took the long version of your day. You do not need a seminar. You need a map you can open after census and still understand.
I write for hospitalists and other physicians first. The math still works if you are not a doctor. The trap is the same. Lifestyle rises to meet the deposit. The house gets bigger because a lender says yes. The loans feel like weather. Years pass. The account is large and still too small to leave. Comparison does extra damage. A classmate’s second place is not a line in your spreadsheet, but it ends up in the number in your head. That number is a collage. These notes exist to turn the collage into a year of spending you would actually keep if the hospital stopped calling.
You will not find product pitches here. You will not find a secret fund. You will not find a claim that a single withdrawal rate is a promise. You will find the freedom number as a working figure, the three variables that move it, and why most of us overestimate the finish line. The levers are the year of spending, the surplus you keep, and what the pile has to earn. You control the first two more than a hot market does. Then you can put your own numbers into the Practice by Choice planner. The math stays on your device. It will not flatter you. That is the point.
Read this if you want a map, not a vibe. Start with the freedom number. Open The Freedom Prescription when you want the longer argument. Practice by Choice and Stethoscope to Freedom are the same voice at different lengths. Use the planner when you are ready to stop guessing. Optional work is a schedule. It is not a personality transplant. The notes are educational. They are not advice about your taxes, your loans, or your specific accounts. Talk to licensed help for that.

- What is a freedom number?
- The annual spend you can fund without the job. Price a year of the life you would keep, then size the pile to that year. It is not a net-worth trophy.

- Is this financial advice?
- No. Educational only. Not a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Not a broker. Talk to licensed help for your own numbers.
